The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
